The Perfect Mother’s Day Ballet

Rockingham Ballet Theatre’s spring ballet is a story with which most moms can identify.  La Fille mal gardee or The Wayward Daughter tells the story of Mme Simone and her wilfull daughter, Lisette. As the ballet opens, Lisette is hiding from her mother to escape doing chores.  All in one morning, Mme Simone has to chase off a would-be suitor, keep Lisette from sneaking off with the harvesters and stop her from playing with the village girls when she is supposed to be churning butter.

Like most parents, Mme Simone has great aspirations for her daughter.  She wants Lisette to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Thomas.  Lisette, however, has a mind of her own. She likes Colin, who is a penniless farm worker. Throughout the ballet, Mme Simone is forced to thwart Lisette’s many attempts to spend time with Colin.  To Mme Simone’s chagrin, even Lisette’s friends are try to help her sneak off with Colin.

The role of Lisette is shared by Anna Sundquist and Jessica Grant.  Grant will perform on Saturday while Sundquist performs in the Sunday matinee. The male lead is danced by Daniel Ranck. These will be the final performances with RBT for Ranck and Sundquist for the foreseeable future. Ranck will be a Trainee at Ballet Magnificat, the US's premiere Christian ballet company, located in Jackson, MS. Sundquist will be moving to Northern Virginia with her parents, where she will be auditioning for the Trainee program at the Washington Ballet among others. Ms. Grant has offers to join Trainee programs at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City and also at the Charlottesville Ballet. She has not finalized her plans.

Treat Mom to this delightful comedy and find out who gets their way at one of the two performances: 7:30 pm, Saturday, May 11 or 3:00 pm Sunday, May 12 in Lehman Auditorium at EMU.  In celebration of Mother’s Day, RBT will hold a free drawing for a facial and will give a rose to the first 140 moms in the audience on Sunday.  The winner will be selected on Sunday.
